Entangled

Sea Lion (no outline_edited.png

In Entangled, I wanted to highlight the impact of plastic pollution on animals, particularly those in the Bay. I was inspired by this through the several visits I would take to San Francisco where I would always see sea lions gathered by the pier. Through Entangled, I wanted to research and focus on how local wildlife is being affected by our waste.
There have been reports on the California Sea Lion Crisis that describe the increasing number of starving seals and sea lions washing up on the shores of the SF Bay. Experts have said that the seal's struggles signal deeper issues within the ocean environment. One of these issues being that marine animals often mistake plastic debris for food, leading to starvation and internal damage. It is also explained how other animals become entangled in discarded trash, which can cause injury or death.
Plastic pollution also leeches harmful chemicals into the water, contaminating ecosystems and ultimately affecting humans through seafood consumption.
This piece shows how animals are being physically entangled in this plastic, but also metaphorically they are entangled into our environmental mess that we’ve created.
